When in Doubt, Do
I find myself in a state of uncertainty, doubt and wavering attention after I finish an all consuming project. The next opportunities and ideas lay abundant before me, but I dare not choose. I just note them down and focus on the current obsessive pastime (books).
Getting past the problem has the simplest of fixes, just starting work. Any work gets my moment going, clears my head and fills me with the confidence to make more intensive decisions.
Although I know the fix, actually picking something arbitrary to do isn't easy. It's difficult and scary to just start, every time, but the more I do it the easier the next step becomes. The following through. And as long as I keep doing that, I'll be doing well. Maybe one day, I'll even make the starting part simple.
So if you have trouble starting, feeling doubt, uncertainties and insecurities, just do something. Anything work related, the simplest task you can think of. It'll get you going. For me it's creating a design. Starting off with references of what I want to work on, quickly gathering a design system of fonts, colors and elements; creating some graphic design with them, write some text of varying depth and unify it all with code. Every process of my work, done in miniature sets me up for success.
Sometimes I focus on a single process and go more in depth. This usually turns into a longer term project and once I start a project, I'm much more likely to start and finish others. Momentum feeds off itself and it's contagious. My task is to keep it up, an eternal flame that keeps me fed.
